Marcela Líškayová

Dear Ms/Mr,

I turn to you with an expectation of hope for understanding and help in my difficult situation.

I was born in Banská Štiavnica in 1981. Like other children, I had my dreams and wishes. However, my life changed in 1995. I began to feel pain in my right leg and the doctor diagnosed it as "tumour in the right leg". At that time, I did not quite realise the full meaning of this word. I did not know that my treatment would last thirteen months. I spent first months lying in hospital because the tumour weakened my leg and it broke. Then I underwent the first chemotherapy, which I survived with difficulties, and after which I had to face my first life exam. I had to come to terms with the situation that I temporarily lost my hair. I knew that it was not the least problem I would have to overcome. Then the second treatment and an operation came. I did not have the slightest idea of what might happen. Despite this fact I faced theoperation with bravery. When I woke up after the operation feeling my leg I thought that everything went well. But when a nurse told me that I would have to wear prosthesis I lost the ground under my feet. I had to accept the reality; there was no other way. I lost my leg, but I still believed that I would leave hospital one day. Finally I came home "cured" of the disease.

I began to use prosthesis, but the one they made for me did not have the right shape and did not fit me. When I was walking I was crying. I tried another prosthesis, but it did not fit again. There are good quality prostheses that are light, do not press the knee and do not crunch at every move, but these are very expensive and they are not refunded by the health insurance company. The financial sources of my family hardly cover the basic living expenses. Since my father died last year I lost his support and a possibility of transport.

At present, I live with my uncle and aunt in Nitra where I study. Despite my hard lot I am trying to live my life, to study, to do some sport, but it is very difficult with crutches. I hope that with your kind support and help I will manage to gain a suitable prosthesis that is crucial for living a "normal life".

If you decide to help me in need, I would like to express my thanks to you in advance for any financial amount that you send to:
